Abscess Care

An abscess is a cluster of pus that occurs when a part of your body tissue becomes infected. Your body’s immune system goes to work by creating white blood cells that attack the infection. During this process the infected area becomes swollen, and tender and generates pus.

Skin abscesses are very common, and can impact virtually all areas of the body. These are generally easy to spot due to redness, tenderness, and swelling.

Treatment for an abscess

Abscesses heal by draining. The treatment is normally through a procedure called an I & D or incision and drainage. Depending on the cause of the abscess, an antibiotic may also be prescribed.

If treated properly, most skin abscesses resolve completely and relatively quickly. However, if not dealt with appropriately, some complications may arise. Most Notably the spread of infection to other parts of the body and through the bloodstream.
