Sometimes the cause of a sore throat is as simple as overuse of your voice (yelling at a sporting event) or sleeping with your mouth open and causing things to dry out. However, when more serious reasons occur it is generally due to a viral infection that settles in your nose and throat.

Strep throat, known as streptococcal pharyngitis, is a more serious bacterial infection that causes a sore and scratchy throat that makes swallowing difficult and painful. Other signs of Strep include tender lymph nodes, red/white patches of pus, and inflammation of the tonsils.

Because each of these issues demonstrates similar symptoms in the same part of the body it is important to have a proper medical assessment and testing done to ensure a proper treatment plan can be identified.
